Green Dentistry at Hawthorne Dental
Since Dr. Watson started his practice in 2005, he has been committed to green dentistry, and each year he and his team expand their repertoire of environmentally friendly practices.
Here is a sampling of what we do:
- All of the metals we remove from your old fillings and crowns are captured in our filters before entering the water system and then saved for environmentally appropriate disposal.
- Compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs were added in the reception area, business area, and hall during a 2009 remodel.
- All non-essential computers and all monitors are turned off each night. The Green Electronics Council evaluated six months of computer ecology for the average American computer user and determined that almost 14 billion kilowatt hours of electricity—over a million tons of greenhouse gases—could be saved if all of us utilized these practices.
- Our programmable thermostat lowers the demand for heat or air conditioning during non-patient hours.
- All of the electricity powering the office comes from renewable sources—wind and biomass—as part of PGE’s Green Source plan.
- Recycling efforts go beyond paper, plastic, and aluminum. We lowered our monthly use of plastics by adding a filtered water cooler for patients instead of the typical cooler with a large plastic bottle on top. We not only recycle our toner cartridges, but we also purchase recycled toner cartridges for our printer. And we take all of the junk faxes we receive and print on the other side for internal, non-patient documents.
- Finally, Dr. Watson looked closely at his commute and decided to make a major change of his own. On most days he rides to work on a Kymco Scooter, which gets a satisfying 75 miles to the gallon: knowledge that makes him much more tolerant of any rain or cold during inclement commutes.

When you’re in for your next visit, rest assured that we’re not only going out of our way to deliver great personalized care, but we’re also doing our part for the environment by adding plenty of green to our dentistry.
